The Oktoberfest goes back to the year 1810, when the Bavarian crown prince and later King Ludwig I married Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. A horse race was organized in honour of the couple on the Theresienwiese (Therese's meadow, named after the bride), and almost the entire population of Munich joined in the celebrations. The party was such a success that it became an annual event.
